A source of readily available Nitrogen and Potash rarely used alone due to its high potash content. Particularly suitable for strawberries, tomatoes when fruiting and all cane fruit.

Rate of use: 10oz in 4 gallons of water (1.5g per l).

Properties A powerful oxidising agent, a soluble source of plant foods. 

History Known since the 12th & 13th in Asia and China. Used historically in warfare by the Chinese in gunpowder and rockets. Manufactured in Elizabethan times at Waltham Abbey in Essex to produce high consistent quality to give constant firing properties in muskets and cannons. 

Manufacture Can be purified to a high degree from soluble Potassium salts by chemical reaction with Ammonia or Nitric Acid. Purification is achieved by re crystallisation. 

Uses The principal use is in horticulture as a soluble source of potassium and nitrogen two essential plant foods, used in intensive production of greenhouse crops and hydroponic culture. Its traditional use as an oxidising agent in pyrotechnics continues, also as a key component in”black powder” for use an oxidiser in model rockets and smoke generators etc.. Other uses include preservation of meat and in pharmaceuticals.
